Upon the rock

What does it mean to build a house on the rock? Pope Benedict XVI says (2006):

Building on the rock means, first of all, to build on Christ and with Christ. These are not just the empty words of some person or another; these are the words of Jesus. We are not listening to any person: we are listening to Jesus. We are not asked to commit to just anything; we are asked to commit ourselves to the words of Jesus.

Praise the Lord

Today, the Church celebrates the feast of the Birth of John the Baptist. It is the birthday of the one who will herald the coming of the Messiah. The name John means ‘Praise the Lord’. This a feast day for us all: each of us called to praise the Lord.

A narrow gate

Decision-making is an inescapable feature of our lives. Some decisions - the-what-shall-I-wear-today kind – are small, but others may have to do with the future direction of my life and are, therefore, major. Important decisions require much more thought. Heart and eyes

The lamp of the body is the eye. It follows that if your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light. But if your eye is diseased, your whole body will be all darkness. If then, the light inside you is darkness, what darkness that will be!

Our Father

In your prayers do not babble as the pagans do, for they think that by using many words they will make themselves heard. Do not be like them; your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

A deeper faith

when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that no one will know you are fasting except your Father who sees all that is done in secret; and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.

Humble and Perfect

If you love those who love you, what right have you to claim any credit? Even the tax collectors do as much, do they not? And if you save your greetings for your brothers, are you doing anything exceptional? Even the pagans do as much, do they not? You must therefore be perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect
